MR. LOWE: I did, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: What did you say to him?
MR. LOWE: This was on the starboard side. I don't know his name, but I know him by sight. He is a steward. He spoke to me on board the Carpathia. He asked me if I knew what I had said to Mr. Ismay. I said, "I don't know Mr. Ismay." "Well," he said, "you used very, very strong language with him." I said, "Did I?" I said, "I can not help it if I did." He said, "Yes, you did," and he repeated the words. If you wish me to repeat them I will do so; if you do not, I will not.
SENATOR SMITH: I Will first ask you this: What was the occasion for your using this harsh language to Mr. Ismay?
MR. LOWE: The occasion for using the language I did was because Mr. Ismay was overanxious and he was getting a trifle excited. He said, "Lower away! Lower away! Lower away! Lower away!" I said — well, let it be —
MR. ISMAY: Give us what you said.
MR. LOWE: The chairman is examining me.
SENATOR SMITH: Mr. Ismay, you asked the witness to give the language?

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous ordonné à M. Ismay de quitter le canot?
M. LOWE : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Que lui avez-vous dit?
M. LOWE : C’était du côté tribord. Je ne connais pas son nom, mais je le connais de vue. C’est un steward. Il m’a parlé à bord du Carpathia. Il m’a demandé si je savais ce que j’avais dit à M. Ismay. J’ai répondu : « Je ne connais pas M. Ismay. » Il m’a répondu : « Vous avez utilisé un langage très, très fort avec lui. » J’ai dit : « Est-ce que je l’ai fait? » J’ai dit : « Je n’y peux rien si je l’ai fait. » Il a répondu : « Oui, vous l’avez fait », et il a répété les mots. Si vous voulez que je les répète, je le ferai; si vous ne le faites pas, je ne le ferai pas.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Je vais d’abord vous demander ceci : quelle a été l’occasion pour vous d’utiliser ce langage dur envers M. Ismay?
M. LOWE : L’occasion d’utiliser le langage que j’ai fait était parce que M. Ismay était plus qu’anxieux et il devenait un peu excité. Il a dit, "Plus bas! Plus bas! Plus bas! Plus bas! » J’ai dit — eh bien, qu’il en soit ainsi —
